Udvar-Hazy Center, air museum, US WW2-era B-29 bomber, Enola Gay, dropped atomic bomb on Hiroshima Major Charles W. The aircraft was flown to the 509 th base at Wendover Army Air Field (AAF) in Utah. After the B-29 was accepted by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) on it was assigned to the 393 rd Bombardment Squadron (BS) of the 509 th. While this exhibit is now closed, Museum specialists continued to restore the remaining components of the airplane, and after an additional nine years the fully assembled Enola Gay went on permanent display at the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. USA, Virginia, Herdon, National Air and Space Museum, Steven F. Tibbets, the commander of the 509 th Composite Group, later named the bomber Enola Gay after his mother. The exhibition text summarized the history and development of the Boeing B-29 fleet used in bombing raids against Japan.Īnother portion of the exhibit detailed the painstaking efforts of Smithsonian aircraft restoration specialists who had spent more than a decade restoring parts of the Enola Gay for this exhibition.
